LERU Talks - Digital Sovereignty

LERU connects the worlds of universities and science policymakers. With LERU Talks, we bring this interaction to a wide audience. The next episode of LERU Talks will be a live, online interview about digital sovereignty on Tuesday, 18 June 2024.

In this instalment of LERU Talks, we explore what digital sovereignty means for universities and what the role of tech companies is. Universities are public knowledge producers and custodians; they increasingly rely on companies to provide digital infrastructures and services. Both of them are dealing with an avalanche of regulation from the EU, aimed at creating a digital single European market with fair competition and respect for public values.

How does the data transformation affect universities and companies? How do they react? What do they want from the EU or from each other? These are some of the questions we will address in this interview.

Our guests are:

  • Prof. Mireille van Eechoud, Professor of Information Law at the University of Amsterdam
  • Mr Daniel Friedlaender, Senior Vice President & Head of the Europe Office of the Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA).

The interview will be moderated by Dr Katrien Maes, LERU Special Initiatives Ambassador Engagement & Impact, and will be streamed on LERU's YouTube channel. The online audience will be able to submit written questions during the interview, which will be put to the speakers live. The link of the live stream will be sent to all registrants in due course.

Previous LERU Talks

Science diplomacy was the subject of the first LERU Talks interview. In this episode, Ms Maria Cristina Russo, Director for Global Approach & International Cooperation in R&I at the European Commission’s Directorate General for R&I, and Dr Jean-Christophe Mauduit, Lecturer in Science Diplomacy at UCL, shared their insights and perspectives on science diplomacy in light of the prevailing geopolitical climate and the EU’s recent initiatives.
