Doctoral Summer School

The LERU Doctoral Summer School is an annual event aiming to provide doctoral candidates with unique professional and personal development opportunities beyond what they are generally exposed to in the course of their PhD training. By creating an exceptional and truly international, intercultural and interdisciplinary meeting of bright young minds, the Summer School creates a highly stimulating learning experience which is of long lasting value to the participants’ future careers. Participants are LERU university PhD candidates who are selected on the basis of a university-wide competition.

Concepts of intervention science applied to global challenges

2 - 8 July 2023, Heidelberg

The 2023 LERU Doctoral Summer school was be hosted by Universität Heidelberg. A group of selected PhD students from LERU members and CE7 universities gathered for a week and will focus on the concepts of intervention science applied to global challenges.

The University of the Future

3 - 8 July 2022, Utrecht

In 2022, the LERU summer school was hosted and organised by the Urban Futures Studio of Utrecht University. Its theme was "The University of the Future: rethinking the role of universities worldwide in the face of the challenges of the 21st century". A group of 60 selected PhD students from LERU members and a number of UU partner universities got together for a week to listen to inspiring speakers and to work on a Manifest.

Re-evaluating the Role of the Expert

9 - 13 August 2021, Dublin

The LERU summer school 2021 was hosted by Trinity College Dublin as an online event. During this week, doctoral candidates from LERU member universities focussed on the role of Doctoral Research and Researchers in Promoting the Importance of the ‘Expert’ in Europe.

Building Research Capacity and a Collaborative Global Community

15 – 19 July 2019, Edinburgh


The LERU Doctoral Summer School at the University of Edinburgh focussed on international collaboration, giving participants the dual benefits of an enhanced understanding of the nature and importance of collaboration, whilst simultaneously creating a multi-disciplinary, global network for their future careers.

The LERU Summer School took place in Leuven from Monday 9 July till Friday 13 July 2018. It focussed on the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration to tackle major challenges in today’s global society.
