In the media: Horizon research security measures ‘reasonable if sector is consulted'

Prof. Kurt Deketelaere, LERU Secretary-General, commented in Research Professional on what Marc Lemaître, Director-General for R&I at the European Commission (EC), said about the need for concrete measures to protect research projects that are funded by the EC.

Prof. Deketelaere said:

“It looks reasonable that the Commission as research funder through the Framework Programme also adapts to the new challenges raised by research security issues. If that means that applicants for Framework Programme funding must comply with certain research security demands when applying, we could live with that on the condition that the necessary time, advice and support is given by the Commission to applicants.”

He added that the sector must be involved in the development of practices as a co-creator and that a transition period would be needed, like with the previous introduction of measures on open access to research papers and a requirement for applicants’ institutions to have gender equality plans in place.
