Berlin statement

During the Global Council of Research-Intensive University Networks meeting in Berlin on 13 and 14 June 2024, LERU and its global network partners signed a new statement re-affirming the values of research-intensive universities.

Research-intensive universities have consistently supported society through conflict, pandemics, and the emergence of groundbreaking ideas by upholding the principles of free and open inquiry, and will keep doing this in the future. Their collective expertise and resources are vital for fostering effective global cooperation to address global challenges. Furthermore, they equip the next generation with the knowledge, research skills, and innovative mindset required to transform new ideas into sustainable economic growth and social benefit.

With this statement, LERU and its global network partners reaffirm the principles upon which we stand and continuously strive for. We call upon governments around the world to work with us and our partners to ensure we can realise the full potential of the distinctive research, innovation, and partnerships our universities offer.

The statement is signed by the Association of American Universities (AAU), Group of Eight in Australia (Go8), the U15 in Canada, the U15 in Germany, the RU11 in Japan, the Russell Group in the UK and LERU. Collectively, they represent more than 160 world-renowned, leading universities.
