In this statement LERU argues for a long-term and substantial investment in basic research. The European Research base belongs to the highest in the world and Europe has the three essential elements to ensure this position: higher education, research and innovation. Frontier research is the foundation for Europe’s future competitiveness: it requires patience, persistence and investment. However, the world does not wait for us: Europe needs to keep growing.
