Research-intensive universities as engines for the "Europe of Knowledge"
Research is an important element to achieve progress, however, the European research effort is significantly smaller than for example that of the U.S.A. To realise a “Europe of Knowledge” basic research in Europe should be reinvigorated. LERU recommends different ideas to improve research in Europe, such as the need for a world leading research base and the importance of competitive funding in Europe. LERU also emphasises the importance of a tripartite collaboration between universities, industry and government.
